I made a Cherry MX Red-like switch for osu. Out of Lego.

A few days ago I was Googling “what is the best switch for osu” and I came across this reddit post by a user who’s account is currently nonexistent. The two most upvoted answers were

rrtyui says red so it’s red. - u/moofen

and

No best switches

Reds are standard uses by most people as far as i know but everyones different so you won’t know what you like unless you try each

I hear browns are a nicer red though - u/pxd

After a bit of researching about Reds, the closest I could get to that was my Xbox One Controller’s left trigger. And I can say it’s much better than using my HP KB2101U, and muuuuuch better than using mouse. I seem to be more comfortable using keys that don’t have click, either when pressed or depressed. The One Controller’s trigger is also an analog input, so It’s treated like an axis by osu, which means that the moment I press it down it registers as a click.

I suggest you go try it if you have one, but the operating force is much higher than that of the Red’s or mouse. Press it nearer to the top to get the best results.

So yesterday I was playing with Legos with my little brother who loves them (like who doesn’t?) and did this, seeking to find out what it would do or change, and alas! A non clicky, short distance, resistant-enough switch! You can try out everything here and what follows btw. So after a bit of experimenting and fine-tuning, making it level, adding tin foil contact points, and adding thin copper wires to connect to my hacked controller, I created this ugly beauty. It acts really similarly to a Red in that is is also a linear switch. The only differences are the operating pressure, the fact it doesn’t ‘bump’ when going up, pre travel, and total travel. I’ve come to like it better than using the trigger, keyboard, and mouse. Feel free to try it out for yourself.

I just wanted to share this to know what you guys think about it, and because I just wanted to share it ([edit ->]) for those of you who don’t have a red switch or are tired of your mouse and keyboard. :P

EDIT: If you want some footage of me playing osu! with it, I’d be glad to record a short video of it.

EDIT 2 the day after: Last night I was trying to replace the 1.5 meter long USB cable it currently had because I was attempting to see if that would fix the horrendous latency, and because that cable was really long and messy. During the process of soldering the new cable to the holes on the PCB, I somehow managed to mess up the main chip, which was a glob of eppxy TERRIBLY close to the soldering points of the cable. So now that board is bricked :( But I have another pcb from a keyboard I broke a while back (by accidentally spilling acetone on it) and I’ll use that instead. I’m positive that that’ll decrease the latency substantially.

##EDIT 3: Video now available! (warning: i suck at osu)
